Something For The Rest Of Us

(Warner Bros.)

From Buffalo, New York, the Goo Goo Dolls are a trio one can never quite pin down. With nine albums under their belt, the group hit the road this summer to celebrate Something For The Rest Of Us.

Opening track “Sweetest Lie” is a bombshell, and points to the quality of the rest of the album. “Now I Hear” features the Goo Goo Dolls’ trademark punky bounce and “Say You’re Free” makes the listener feel just that. Standout ballads include the whip-smart “As I Am” and “Notbroken” which seems as real as a hot tear on a pillow. “Still Your Song” gets better with every listen, and the title cut is as fresh and real as a cloud passing the full moon.

As this album makes clear, these guys haven’t been around for 20-plus years just because somebody behind a desk liked them. They’re full of stand-tall spirit, and if they haven’t already, someday they’ll get their due as rock ‘n’ roll gems.
