The Brick Album

(Darling Street)

This newgrass band was formed in 2003 by vocalist/bassist Carol Young and vocalist/instrumentalist Kym Warner, both originally from Australia. Tennessee fiddler phenomenon Tyler Andal and National Flatpicking Champion Carl Miner complete the current group. This album, their fifth, follows Grammy nominations for their two previous albums, Viridian in 2007 and Fascination in 2009.

The infectious first track, “Make It Out West,” features guest Sam Bush’s amazing mandolin artistry along with Andal’s fiddle. The harmonies of Young & Warner soar sweetly on “Faded” which refers to the importance of an anchor during inevitable disappointment in life. Young teams with guest vocalist Vince Gill on “Heart Fixer,” about someone who can make bad things seem less so via a Texmex/Everly Brothers sound. Imagine a Virginia reel transported to the southern border of Australia and you have a perfect opportunity to showcase instrumentalists Andal and Miner on “Adelaide” while “Loving You Is The Only Way To Go” examines all the doubts about love.

This album makes abundantly clear why publications, ranging from Rolling Stone to Time have sung the praises of this group.
