The Essential Rosanne Cash

(Sony/Legacy)

Being the offspring of a country icon doesn’t guarantee recognition—just ask Rosanne’s stepsister Carlene Carter or stepbrother John Carter Cash—so Johnny’s daughter from his first marriage had to earn her popularity. She did that through a batch of terrific ’80s albums that expanded country into folk, rock and sometimes painfully introspective singer/songwriter fare, while maintaining a foothold in country and western. This double disc trumps previous collections by including music from Cash’s four most recent releases, including two gems from 2009’s The List, collaborations with Chris Thile and Bruce Springsteen. Follow her progression from talented newcomer to veteran journeywoman through 36 tracks without a misstep among them.
