Remembering Davy Jones

Singer Davy Jones died this morning in Stuart, Florida, after apparently suffering a heart attack. Jones, best known as the lead vocal on some of the Monkees’ most beloved hits, including “Daydream Believer,” was completing a solo tour at the time of his death and had performed at B.B. King Blues Club in New York City earlier this month. Perhaps the most theatrical of the four, his Broadway credits included starring as Oliver!‘s Artful Dodger in the early ’60s, performing on the very same Ed Sullivan Show on which the Beatles made their American debut. Later, he took Marcia Brady to her 1971 prom. Last summer, he reunited with his Monkees band mates Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork for a tour celebrating the 45th anniversary of the group and the television show that transformed them into teen idols. (Former Monkee Michael Nesmith hasn’t been part of a reunion since 1997.) He will be missed for his wit, charisma and his unbeatable ability to truly entertain in every sense of the word.
