Black Country Communion hearkens back to the days of the hard rock super-group. Consisting of guitarist Joe Bonamassa, bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple), keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater) and drummer Jason Bonham (John’s son), the band has released two well-received studio albums. This two-disc set and companion DVD chronicle the band’s first tour.

Bonamassa is the star of the album. Known primarily as a blues player, here he plays in a heavier, chunky style reminiscent of Jimmy Page. And while Hughes (considered to be something of a vocal god among certain fans of classic hard rock) sings lead on the majority of the tracks, it is the songs with Bonamassa’s voice up front (“The Battle for Hadrian’s Wall,” “Song of Yesterday” and “The Ballad of John Henry”) are the real standouts.

The album, produced by Kevin Shirley, is sonically impeccable and the music is top-notch throughout. Fans of the band and classic hard rock in general will not be disappointed by this live effort.
