Ravi Shankar, the Temptations and others to receive Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards

The Recording Academy has announced its 2013 Special Merit Award recipients. Sitar legend Ravi Shankar and popular Motown stars the Temptations will be honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards. Unfortunately, Shankar just passed at a San Diego hospital yesterday.

The list of Lifetime Achievement Award recipients also includes Carole King, Glenn Gould, Charlie Haden, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Patti Page. The group will join an impressive collection of award-winners; last year’s winners included Gil Scott-Heron, Diana Ross and the Allman Brothers Band.

The Academy also announced the winners of the Trustee Awards and the Technical Grammy Awards. The Trustee Awards are granted to those who’ve made great contributions in recording outside of performance, while the Technical Grammy Awards are granted to those who have made great technical accomplishments in recording. The Trustee Award honorees will include Marilyn and Alan Bergman, Phil and Leonard Chess of Chess Records and the late Capitol Records executive Alan Livingston. The Technical Grammy Award honorees include Roland Corporation founder Ikutaro Kakehashi, audio engineer Dave Smith and microphone manufacturer Royer Labs. The invite-only ceremony will be held on February 9th, with acknowledgement given during the 55th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on February 10th.
