Elvis Costello has had his fair share of collaborators. Some of them, like Nick Lowe, are right up his musical alley; others, like Allen Toussaint and Burt Bacharach, pushed the Angry Young Man into interesting territory. His latest collaborators may be his most interesting yet: Billboard has revealed that Costello’s next album will be a collaboration with The Roots.

Roots drummer/bandleader Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson said that the idea to work on an album with Costello came after the singer made three consecutive appearances on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon during the show’s week-long tribute to Bruce Springsteen. “By the third time [Costello came on the show], he was like, ‘let’s stop messing around and actually do something together,'” Questlove told Billboard. The initial plan was to record a few songs, but the tracklist soon grew to album-length.

The untitled album still has no release date or even a label, and none of the recordings have been mixed or mastered. Even with that uncertainty, Questlove remained positive that the album would come out soon on one of the artists’ respective labels.
