Thirty years later, Prince still finds ways to surprise us. The singer has been dormant since 2010, when he released 20Ten and shut down his website, declaring that “the Internet is over. Last week, though, a Twitter account named 3rdEyeGirl posted what appears to be Prince’s first new song in three years. This morning, Prince followed it up with an official lyric video.
The video for the new song, which is titled “Screwdriver,” shows Prince playing with a band while the lyrics flash over images. The song has a distinctly rock-leaning sound more reminiscent of New Wave groups like The Cars or The Police than Prince’s funky self.
People are still speculating as to who the mysterious “3rdEyeGirl” is, whether it’s someone who has access to Prince’s recordings or if it’s Prince himself, having a little bit of fun at the Internet’s expense. If he keeps putting out songs like this, we’re not complaining.
