This morning, David Bowie gave us the second taste of his upcoming album, The Next Day. “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” gives credence to the statements issued by Bowie producer Tony Visconti and guitarist Earl Slick that Bowie’s upcoming album would be more guitar-heavy than previously indicated on “Where Are We Now?” The song is a chugging, mid-tempo rocker anchored by bursts of electric guitar and, of course, David Bowie’s inimitable vocals. If this is how the rest of the album is supposed to sound, that may not be so bad.

The video for “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” is about as strange as you’d expect from Bowie at this point. He and Tilda Swinton play a bland suburban couple whose lives are turned upside down by a celebrity couple haunting them. Things get weirder from there, eventually devolving into a body-swapping stop-motion nightmare. Or, as it’s also known, a typical Wednesday evening in the Bowie household.

The Next Day comes out on March 12th on Columbia Records. Watch the video for “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” below:
