Last Shop Standing Named Official Film of Record Store Day 2013

lastshopstandingdvd_thumbIf you’re a fan of those old vinyls, then you should be getting pumped for a holiday fashioned especially for you: Record Store Day (April 20). The organizers behind the annual holiday have just announced the Official Film of Record Store Day 2013: Last Shop Standing – the Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of the Independent Record Shop.

Based on Graham Johnson’s book, Last Shop Standing follows the ups and downs of independent record stores mostly in the U.K. The film, which is directed by Pip Piper, features interviews with shop owners and musicians including Johnny Marr, Paul Weller, Billy Bragg, Richard Hawley and more.

Last Shop Standing is a great window into the minds of record store people and artists who share a passion for music,” Michael Kurtz, co-founder of Record Store Day said. “It’s just plain cool and anyone who supports record stores, or worked in a record store, or supports their local record store, will really enjoy it.”

The film has been screening in the U.K. for a couple of months now, and the documentary will make its U.S. debut this spring. The week before Record Store Day, participating U.S. stores will screen the film.

Last Shop Standing is more than just a film about collecting records,” Johnny Marr said in a statement. “It’s about passions and people caring about what they love. It is a story about records and some other very important things.” You can watch the trailer for Last Shop Standing below.
