R.I.P. Dan Toler, Former Allman Brothers Band Guitarist

Dan Toler Allman Brothers Band dead ALS Lou Gehrig's diseaseFormer Allman Brothers Band and Gregg Allman Band guitarist Dan Toler has died, according to reports coming out of the Sarasota area. He was 65 years old.

Toler got his first break while playing with Dickey Betts & Great Southern; his playing is featured on that band’s 1977 self-titled album and 1978’s Atlanta’s Burning Down. Toler followed Betts to the Allman Brothers Band in 1979, and he appeared on Enlightened RoguesReach For The Sky, and Brothers of the Road. Toler also joined Gregg Allman in the first incarnation of the Gregg Allman Band in 1986 through 1988.

In recent years, Toler was in the Renegades Of Southern Rock supergroup, and he frequently collaborated with John Townshend of the Sandford-Townshend Band. However, he announced that he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease in 2011. According to his former bandmate Chazz Trippy, Toler was unable to play guitar for six months before his death.

Dan Toler was a man who loved music, who gave everything he had to the world of music. He will be sorely missed.
