R.I.P. Rick Huxley Of The Dave Clark Five

Rick Huxley Dave Clark Five obituaryThe BBC reports that Rick Huxley, the bassist and co-founder of the Dave Clark Five, has died following a bout with emphezyma. He was 72 years old.

Huxley joined the Dave Clark Quintet in 1958, starting on guitar but switching to bass when the group became the Dave Clark Five. The group honed a sound that the music press referred to as the “Tottenham sound,” in reference to their North London origins. Like most British groups, they followed the lead of The Beatles and made the jump to America, where the group found its greatest success. Huxley played bass on all of the group’s many hit singles, including “Glad All Over,” “Catch Us If You Can,” and “Over And Over.” After the band disbanded in 1970, Huxley led a relatively quiet life pursuing a career in real estate.

Huxley joined Clark and guitarist Lenny Davidson at the 2009 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony to induct the Dave Clark Five. Clark described his bandmate and friend as “a real gentleman” and “an immensely talented musician with an amazing sense of humor, he always made me smile.”
