Dave Grohl’s Sound City Players Release Video for “Mantra”

dave_grohl_trent_reznor_a_lDave Grohl’s Sound City documentary was the impetus that started the Sound City Players ensemble. The project allowed many different musicians to come together and collaborate in another one of Grohl’s creative ventures. In this video, you can see Grohl collaborate with Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme and Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor for the recording of “Mantra” at his Studio 606 space. Grohl provides the drumwork, Homme provides a steady bassline for some extra backbone and Reznor elaborates with piano. It’s a lengthy track, clocking in at almost a full eight minutes. But you can’t tell; the collaboration between the three is natural and seamless. Subdued and contemplative, this track is fully grounded and necessary in all of its elements. Plus, it’s all instruments here, so you get to clearly hear every line. “Mantra” is on the Sound City documentary, Sound City: Real to Reel, due out March 12. If you want to check out the Sound City Players live, then they’ll be hitting the stage at SXSW on March 14.
