MTV Video Music Awards Headed to Barclays Center

barclays21n-1The Barclays Center hasn’t been around long, but it has already housed many big acts (::ahem:: The Rolling Stones ::ahem::) and always seems to be packed to the doors with New Yorkers going to enjoy everything from concerts to basketball games and now…awards shows. This year, MTV’s Video Music Awards show will be making a cross-country trip from its usual home in Los Angeles to our own New York. The Barclays Center, which is home of the Brooklyn Nets and owned by high-rollers such as Jay-Z, will be doing the honors. “From hip hop to hipsters, Jay-Z to MGMT, Brooklyn musicians have a long history of dominating the ‘spotlight’ on MTV,” Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz said in a statement. “Brooklyn is a cultural Mecca—the hippest, coolest place for young people across the country—and has played a crucial role in the careers of some of 2013’s biggest bands, like fun. and the Lumineers. Now, it is only fitting that the first time Brooklyn will ever host a major awards show, we are welcoming the most exciting and talked about spectacle in the music industry … I’m so thrilled that I’ll probably get ‘no sleep till Brooklyn’ hosts the VMAs!” This will be the first time in four years that the award show has taken place outside of L.A. The 30th annual VMAs will take place at the Barclays Center on August 25.
