The Most Bizarre Musical Endorsements

Courtney LoveNJOY e-cigarettes

Courtney Love is at it again. Earlier this week, the star appeared in an ad for NJOY e-cigarettes. In the commercial, Love is enjoying her fake cigarettes at a very fancy function when an older woman says to her, “You know, you can’t smoke in here,” to which Love replies in her typical fashion, “Relax. It’s a fucking NJOY.”

Billy Corgan—Walter E. Smithe furniture and Corgan’s Resistance Pro wrestling company

Need to do two totally different, totally unrelated endorsements? Why not kill two birds with one stone and combine them in an ad that makes absolutely no sense? That’s what Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan did. In the commercial, a game of musical chairs turns into a wrestling match. As one of the wrestlers prepares to break a chair over a man’s head, Corgan stops him, saying, “Wait! that’s a Walter E. Smithe chair!”

Andrew W.K—Playtex Fresh + Sexy Wipes

Andrew WK might want to get up close and personal with you, ladies. Playtex (yes, Playtex, as in the famous manufacturer of feminine sanitary products) picked W.K. as the face of these wipes, which were designed for use by both men and women after they engaged in sexual activities. Skeevy? We think so.

Bill Wyman—metal detectors

You can go treasure hunting with Bill Wyman! We’re not exactly sure why, but the former Rolling Stone bassist has his own metal detectors. You can treasure hunt at his website.

Bob Dylan—Victoria’s Secret

No, he wasn’t wearing any of the merchandise, but he was in a commercial with famous model Adrian Lima, who was clad in the signature lingerie and Angel wings to promote the “Angels in Venice” line.

Ozzy Osbourne—I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter

In this commercial, Osbourne and his impersonator try to get creative in the kitchen with some baking, but can’t tell the difference between the margarine product and the real butter, just like we can’t tell the difference between the star and his impersonator.

KISS—KISS Kasket (also, literally anything else you can buy with money.)

This is the perfect gift for the recently deceased KISS fan. Made of 20-gauge steel and featuring iconic KISS images, this casket is pretty hardcore, to say the very least. We’re still waiting for a chain of KISS funeral homes to open up

Rolling Stones—Rice Krispies cereal

Right now, the Stones are out and about preparing for their newly announced North American tour. But back in 1963, the band did an English cereal ad for Rice Krispies cereal.

Johnny Rotten—Country Life Butter

Country Life Butter must be pretty punk. In the commercial, John Lydon, aka the Sex Pistols’ Johnny Rotten, hair fashioned in spikes and dressed in tweed, lightheartedly endorses Country Life Butter.

Iggy Pop—Swiftcover Insurance

Even rock stars need insurance, and Iggy Pop got behind Swiftcover.com in this endorsement. However, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled that the ad was misleading; ironically, Pop would not have been able to be covered by the company because swiftcover.com excluded people in the entertainment industry. Even though Switftcover.com was rewarded with a huge boost in sales, the ASA ruled that the ad could no longer be broadcast in that form.
