Bob Dylan To Re-visit ‘Self Portrait’ In New Bootleg Series Album

Bob Dylan Another Self PortraitBob Dylan has made several acclaimed albums, but only one album in the singer’s considerable discography could really be considered notorious: Self Portrait, the 1970 album made after Dylan’s mysterious exile from the public eye that infuriated fans and got critic Greil Marcus to ask, “what is this shit?” Still, the album has since found a handful of fans and supporters since its release, and it seems as if Dylan himself thinks the time is right to re-visit his most maligned album in Columbia’s Bootleg Series. The end result is The Bootleg Series Vol. 10: Another Self Portrait, due out August 27th.

Another Self Portrait contains sessions recorded from 1969 to 1971, during which Dylan recorded material that would end up on Portrait and on its follow-up, 1972’s New Morning. The sessions, which feature David Bromberg on guitar and Al Kooper on keyboards, include takes in which Dylan re-imagines sounds and arrangements from his previous albums. Also included in the set is a recording of Dylan and The Band playing at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1969. Ironically, Greil Marcus has written liner notes for the collection. We’re assuming he’ll be a little kinder this time around.
