Johnny Rotten to be Honored with BMI Icon Award

imagesJohn Lydon, famously known as Johnny Rotten, will be honored by music rights organization BMI for his contributions to music. According to Reuters, the former Sex Pistols frontman will be awarded BMI’s Icon Award at a gala to be held on Oct. 15 in London.

“Jack Lydon is a true icon whose influence on music, fashion and art has been felt around the world,” said BMI President and CEO Del Bryant in a statement.

Lydon has turned his nose up against other honors, such as when he compared the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to a “piss stain” in 2006, but it looks like he may accept this one; he announced the news about the award on his website.

The Sex Pistols became known for their anarchic and profane songs in the 1970s and became known for leading the punk rock movement in Britain. Their only studio album, 1977’s Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols was a landmark punk record, but its lyrics led to an obscenity trial. Soon after the release of the album, Lydon left the band to form Public Image Ltd. The band broke up in the 1990s and reunited in 2009.
