Richie Havens to be Remembered at Woodstock Festival Grounds

imagesThe world of music lost one of its best when folk singer Richie Havens died from a heart attack in April. But now the singer will be commemorated at the site of Woodstock, the iconic festival he opened in 1969.

In 1969, Woodstock and its 400,000 participants made history. Havens wasn’t supposed to be the first act to hit the stage at Woodstock, but some of the other artists hadn’t arrived yet and the concert was already running hours behind schedule. Organizer Michael Lang told Havens to open up the fest, and, as they say, the rest was history.

The ceremony will take place on Aug. 18 at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, which was formerly Max Yasgur’s farm in upstate New York. His ashes will be scattered on the grounds. According to Havens’ website, a free admission ticket will get you into the “day of song and remembrance.” More details will be released soon.
