Singer-songwriter Cass McCombs is back with a new album, a sprawling 2-disc set called Big Wheel And Others. Last time around, McCombs put out two albums in one year, so the double album is probably a more concise way to go about things.

Throughout his career, McCombs has veered from acoustic folkie to hard-driving garage rocker, and the 22-track Big Wheel is likely to give listeners a look at both sides of McCombs. Our first taste of the album, “There Can Be Only One,” finds McCombs closer to the “folkie” side of the spectrum. It’s a sweet, mellow songs that showcases McCombs’ natural gift for melody.
