Basia Bulat Tall Tall ShadowFollowing her two successful previous releases, Oh My Darling and Heart of My Own, Canadian folkie Basia Bulat has garnered a great deal of praise and recognition. This, her third release, should greatly enhance her success. Sonically, this production goes well beyond Bulat’s previous two efforts, and supports her soft, fragile vocals beautifully.

This album is intensely personal, full of tragic loss balanced by abundant joy. Her lyrics have matured as she better learns to get her words to tell the song in her heart. The title song and opening cut, “Tall Tall Shadow” makes her position quite clear: “Be true or be gone.” Regardless of the pain that loss of love brings, she is willing to stand tall and demand what the heart in love demands, and if it cannot be given, well, then, be gone. This is further highlighted in the bittersweet “Promise Not to Think About Love” in which she wryly comments on her lovers’ request that she not think about love.

For me, the album’s highlight is “Ports of Amsterdam”, a beautiful delicate rendering of the simple longing for a lost love. Ms. Bulat is now coming into the full range of her talents, which is great news for all of us.
