2014 Grammy Nominations Announced

2014 Grammy Awards nomineesThe 2014 Grammy nominees were announced at a ceremony on Friday night, and the nomination field is markedly different from last year’s set of nominees and winners. While last year’s crop of nominees was heavy on the folk/Americana side of things, this year’s group of nominees is indicative of the dance-pop trend that has been sweeping the pop charts as the likes of Lorde, Daft Punk, and Robin Thicke took over the Album, Song, and Record of the Year categories.

Elsewhere, the Grammys provided an interesting collection of nominees. The Rock nominees provided the biggest surprises as Led Zeppelin scored two nominations for their box set Celebration Day while veterans like David Bowie, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, and the reunited Black Sabbath scored nominations alongside younger acts like Jack White, Alabama Shakes, and Queens of the Stone Age. The Americana categories were less surprising as Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell, Steve Martin & Edie Brickell, Buddy Miller & Jim Lauderdale, Allen Toussaint, and Mavis Staples were all nominated for Best Americana album. Charlie Musselwhite scored two nominations for Best Blues Album, once for his collaboration with Ben Harper and again as a participant in the Remembering Little Walter tribute album.

Newcomers The Milk Carton Kids led a collection of excellent folk artists nominated for Best Folk Album; also nominated are new albums from Guy Clark and The Greencards, as well as the Arhoolie Records 50th Anniversary album.
