Allman Brothers Biopic Casts Lead Actors

The Allman Brothers Band movieVariety reports that All-American Rejects frontman Tyson Ritter and actor Wyatt Russell have been cast as, respectively, Gregg and Duane Allman in Midnight Rider, the upcoming independent film about the early days of the Allman Brothers Band. Production on the film is set to begin in February.

The casting is clearly informed by the musicianship required to play both Allmans, as Ritter plays piano and organ and Russell has taken up slide guitar in recent years. The film, which is based off of Gregg’s memoir My Cross To Bear, will be written and directed by Randall Miller. This isn’t Miller’s first foray into filmmaking based on music history: he and co-writer Jody Savin were the creative team behind this year’s CBGB.

The film is being done with the blessing of Allman himself, who has signed on as an executive producer alongside his manager Michael Lehman. The film will use original Allman recordings in the soundtrack as well as renditions performed by the cast.
