Aretha Franklin Announces New Album

Aretha Franklin new albumThe Queen of Soul is heading back into the studio. Aretha Franklin announced today that she is working on a new album with Don Was, Clive Davis, and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. The album is set to be released in the spring/summer of 2014.

In an interview with Billboard, Franklin described the album as a “concept album” in which she gives her interpretation of songs made famous by iconic female singers. Among the songs she has selected for the album are Barbara Streisand’s “People,” Donna Summer’s “Last Dance,” and Destiny’s Child’s “Bootylicious.”

Franklin is also taking an interesting tactic in making this record by letting her producers and arrangers work without her input until she does her vocal tracks. “I’m leaving it up to their expertise in that area,” Franklin said.

Franklin’s announcement comes after a year marred by a health scare that forced her to cancel several tour dates. Here’s hoping that the new album points to a brighter 2014 for Aretha.
