Joan Jett, Willie Nelson, Cheap Trick Boycotting Sea World

Joan Jett SeaWorldSome of music’s biggest names are boycotting Sea World in response to a CNN documentary detailing the effects that living in captivity has on the park’s famous orcas. Willie Nelson, Cheap Trick, Heart, and Barenaked Ladies have all cancelled upcoming concerts at the amusement park, while Joan Jett has asked that the park stop using “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” as “walk-in music” for the park’s “Shamu Rocks” show.

While Nelson and Barenaked Ladies cancelled their shows in part because of fan petitions on Change.org, Jett’s move falls in line with her outspoken (and occasionally controversial) support of animal rights. Jett was recently featured on a PETA postage stamp, and her staunch vegetarian stance resulted in her getting booted off of the Thanksgiving Day Parade float sponsored by her rancher-friendly home state of South Dakota.

In a statement issued to the press, Sea World officials said the following: “While we are disappointed that a small group of misinformed individuals were able to deny fans what would have been great concerts at Sea World by Heart, Willie Nelson, and Barenaked Ladies, we respect the bands’ decisions.”
