Kinks Musical In The Works

The Kinks musicalA musical based on the life of Kinks founder Ray Davies that uses many of his classic songs is set to debut in London next year. Titled Sunny Afternoon, the play will open at London’s Hampstead Theatre.

The script will come courtesy of Joe Penhall, the winner of the 2000 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play for Blue/Orange. His script will focus on Davies’ life growing up as well as the beginnings of the band he co-founded with his brother Dave.

The announcement of the play’s release comes amid speculation that the Kinks are preparing for a full-fledged reunion in 2014, the 50th anniversary of the group’s founding. Ray Davies has kept silent about the possible reunion, but Dave – who released a new album called I Will Be Me in June – spoke very positively about possibly reuniting, saying that the famous tension between him and his brother had subsided following Dave’s 2004 stroke.
