Lost Johnny Cash Found, To Be Released In March

Johnny Cash new albumThere certainly hasn’t been a dearth of posthumous Johnny Cash albums, but the new Cash release coming out in March may turn more heads than usual. Out Among The Stars, an unreleased album Cash recorded in the 1980s, will finally see the light of day on March 25th.

Cash recorded Out Among The Stars between 1981 and 1984 while on Columbia Records, but the record was ultimately shelved. The recordings took place during a commercial downturn in Cash’s career, as country music was being pushed in a more commercial direction that clashed with the “outlaw country” style Cash had perfected throughout his career. What’s more interesting is that Out Among The Stars is produced by former CBS Records Nashville president Billy Sherrill, a man whose musical sensibilities were very different from Cash’s.

The recordings were kept in Cash’s vault until his son John Carter Cash and the Legacy Records archivists began parsing through them this year. John has described the album as “pop country,” but also sees the record as having considerable merits. “He’s in the very prime of his voice for his lifetime,” John said. “He’s pitch perfect.”
