The International Folk Alliance Conference marks its 26th year in 2014, and in conjunction with the storied conference, Folk Alliance International (FAI) is hosting a Winter Music Camp . The conference, which is moving along with the headquarters of FAI to Kansas City, Mo., will take place Feb. 19 to 23.

This year’s keynote speaker is Graham Nash, founding member of Crosby, Still & Nash and the Hollies. Former Vice President Al Gore is also a featured presenter, and will give a presentation on global climate change. Legendary singer/songwriter Tom Rush will also speak.

The conference will feature a juried showcase of more than 200 performers, with an additional 300-plus unofficial private showcases. Workshops, panels and discussions will spotlight current issues in presenting, promoting and preserving folk music. Special events include a “Wisdom of the Elders” panel featuring Carolyn Hester and Josh White, Jr., networking events and the Folk Alliance Elaine Weissman Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The Winter Music Camp, a new feature at the conference, will offer music classes for a wide range of musical styles and instruments, including guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele and dulcimer, for any skill level. It will also include a record and memorabilia show, late night jam sessions and band participation.

FAI’s goal is to promote and protect traditional and contemporary folk music, dance and related arts, and has more than 2,800 members worldwide. The International Folk Alliance Conference is one of the largest music conferences in North America.
