As filming of the long-awaited James Brown biopic Get On Up wrapped recently, producer Mick Jagger, director Tate Taylor (who also directed The Help) and star Chadwick Boseman (who most recently played Jackie Robinson in  42) talked to Rolling Stone about the film.

Get On Up, which had been in development since the ’90s, was shot in Mississippi and will cover Brown’s childhood up until his late career.

Jagger studied Brown closely as their paths crossed.

“The way he interacted with the audience, the timing, I was taking it all in and trying to understand the whole picture of it,” Jagger said.

Taylor said he chose Boseman for the role because of Boseman’s southern roots. “I wanted someone with the red soil of that part of the country in their veins,” he said.

Boseman underwent six weeks of training in singing and dancing for the role. Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Dan Aykroyd and Craig Robinson will also appear in the film.  Get On Up is scheduled for a Oct. 1 release.
