Up And Coming: Temples

Temples bandGet familiar with Temples, a psych-rock band from Kettering, England who were named Britain’s best new band by former Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher. In an interview with NME conducted late last year, Gallagher criticized BBC Radio 1 for its lack of promotion with bands like Temples. “I don’t understand it,” Gallager said.  “It’s when radio stations start focus groups. They literally go outside their building and ask people walking by, ‘If I played you this song, what would you think?’ and all that. Don’t ask the man on the street! He’s a cunt! That’s why he’s the man on the street, not the man in the expensive restaurant eating fucking mini sausages at four in the afternoon!”

However, Temples are doing just fine without the help of BBC. Having signed with Fat Possum Records, the band is set to release Sun Structures, a colorful palette of danceable psychedelic pop tunes. The album revisits the backroads of 60’s psych rock, most notably on “The Guesser” which hints at The Guess Who’s “No Time.” But Temples doesn’t simply hearken back to the glories of music’s past; songs like “Keep in the Dark” and “Test of Time” seamlessly trip into modern realms led by bright pop melodies and catchy beats. It makes sense, then, that they’d be tapped to play both Coachella and Austin Psych Fest.

At the moment, the number of likes on the band’s Facebook page clocks in just below 54,000. Come festival season, watch how quickly that number rises.
