Dylan’s Basement Tapes Get New Life

Songs written during the recording for 1975's The Basement Tapes are finally seeing the light of day.
Songs written during the recording for 1975’s The Basement Tapes are finally seeing the light of day.

Bob Dylan’s legendary basement tapes, recorded in a West Saugerties, NY cellar with members of the Band in the late 60s, are getting a makeover. Dylan originally recorded 30 songs, of which 24 were released on 1975’s  The Basement Tapes

With Dylan’s blessing, producer T Bone Burnett will record around 50 never-before-recorded Dylan-penned songs with the likes of Jim James, Elvis Costello and Marcus Mumford.

The songs will feature original music composed by the artists using Dylan’s lyrics. The artists have recorded several different versions of the same songs, but the final lineup and number of songs that will be released has not been decided upon.

The making of the album will be recorded in a documentary called Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued, which will premiere on Showtime in conjunction with the album’s release this fall.

The Carolina Chocolate Drops’ Rhiannon Giddens and Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith are also contributing to the project.
