The Locust Honey String Band – Never Let Me Cross Your Mind (Self-released)

Artist:

Label:

Release Date:

Locust Honey String BandThe core of American country and old-time music lives on through Asheville, North Carolina’s own Locust Honey String Band. The music is a collaboration of talents by singer and fiddler Chloe Edmonstone, old-time singer/guitarist Meredith Watson and the newest addition to the group, banjo player Hilary Hawke. Each member brings together a musical jubilee of Southern musical traditions. The female trio has been inspired by legends such as Loretta Lynn, Kitty Wells, Ola Belle Reed and The Carter Family.

Never Let Me Cross Your Mind features originals by Edmonstone between covers of classics. They are able to convert 50’s country songs like Cecil Null’s “I’ve Forgotten More Than You’ll Ever Know About Him” into beautiful string band music, and Nick Cave’s dreary “Henry Lee” becomes an interesting and ambitious Appalachian acoustic number. The album creates a gritty and spirited sound while remaining instrumentally and vocally masterful. It’s clear all three women have an abundant passion and knowledge of the genre, settling on vibrant musical arrangements that demonstrate their unique three-part vocal harmonies.

The album is an excellent celebration of the power of acoustic music. It is the second record by Locust Honey, and brings with it a newer, more balanced sound that will certainly resonate with traditional and modern country music enthusiasts.
