Even something as simple as a record contract isn’t simple when Morrissey is involved. Two weeks after reports surfaced that he had been dropped from Harvest Records after publicly criticizing them and one week after sources at Harvest refuted those claims, Morrissey is once again asserting that Harvest Records has severed ties with him. This is probably going to get worse before it gets better.
The Morrissey fan site True To You–on which Morrissey occasionally releases official statements–is refuting the Billboard story that, in turn, refuted their news of Morrissey’s departure from Harvest. While True To You doesn’t directly quote the Moz or his representatives, they assert that both Morrissey and his lawyer “are in possession of e-mails from [Harvest Records chief] Steve Barnett and Mr. Barnett’s personal assistant, both of whom confirm that Captiol-Harvest have ended their relationship with Morrissey.” The statement goes further to assert that Morrissey never actually signed a record contract with Harvest to begin with and that his new album, World Peace Is None Of Your Business, is owned solely by him.
Representatives from Harvest Records have not responded to these claims, but we can only assume that they’ll have a response some time soon. Can’t we all just get along?
