Sinead O'Connor, I'm Not Bossy I'm The Boss

Sinéad O’Connor has never cared very much about what people think of her and, now that she’s in her late 40s, she seems to care even less. Here, as ever, the political and the personal are one and the same for the brave-hearted, brash-mouthed Irish singer/songwriter. But those elements are tempered, at least somewhat, by the maturity and wisdom gained from a life well-lived.

With I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss, her tenth album release, O’Connor continues to let it all come as it may. Whether stepping into the role of mistress, lover, bride, girl or badass, O’Connor inhabits each character and each song with integrity, authenticity and power…always power. Even when she quiets her wail down to a whisper, that power is there, potentially more so. On first blush, I’m Not Bossy will feel immediately familiar and comfortable to longtime fans. Listening more deeply, though, will reveal the subtleties of the form that O’Connor and producer John Reynolds build into the collection.

After various musical adventures, there’s something about I’m Not Bossy that feels like a return to form for O’Connor, even though that credit should probably go to the unfortunately overlooked How About I Be Me (and You Be You)?, which dropped in 2012. Like so many of O’Connor’s albums, every track could be considered a standout to a finely tuned ear.
