CMJ Rocked By New York Ebola Scare

[UPDATE BELOW]The CMJ Music Marathon carried itself with a bit of unease last night after a New York doctor became the first person to test positive for the ebola virus in the city. One Brooklyn venue has since cancelled some of its showcases after it found out that the patient had visited there before testing positive for the disease.

According to reports in The New York Times and elsewhere, Dr. Craig Spencer returned to New York City on October 17th after treating ebola patients in Guinea. Yesterday morning, Spencer was hospitalized with a high fever and has since tested positive for the virus. He is currently at Bellvue Hospital in isolation.

Before he was hospitalized, Spencer took the train from his Harlem apartment to Williamsburg, where he visited the concert venue/bowling alley The Gutter, which cancelled their scheduled showcase last night. A statement issued from the venue said that the cancellation was a precautionary measure and that none of their patrons were in any danger. The venue also plans re-open as usual tonight after getting approval from health officials.

Previous reports suggesting that Spencer had attended Brooklyn Bowl turned out to be false.

[UPDATE] CMJ has released the following statement: “We have been diligently following the news on Ebola and will continue to be proactive of the situation and circumstances. At this time CMJ will continue on as scheduled and if anything should change we will act accordingly.”
