Martin Scorcese To Produce Grateful Dead Documentary

Martin Scorcese is no stranger to music, as his documentaries on The Band, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and The Rolling Stones would indicate. Now, the famed director is teaming up with Amir Bar-Lev to tackle a most daunting documentary subject: The Grateful Dead.

Deadline reports that Scorcese and Bar-Lev have been attached as producer and director, respectively, to an upcoming documentary chronicling the Grateful Dead’s history, from their inception in 1965 to Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995 and their current run as The Dead. Surviving Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzman and Mickey Hart will all be interviewed as part of the documentary as well as other famous personalities from the Grateful Dead’s inner circle. Music selection for the film will be done by Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux.

The band issued the following statement: “Millions of stories have been told about the Grateful Dead over the years. With our 50th Anniversary coming up, we thought it might just be time to tell one ourselves and Amir is the perfect guy to help us do it. Needless to say, we are humbled to be collaborating with Martin Scorsese…he has made some of the greatest music documentaries ever with some of our favorite artists and we are honored to have him involved. The 50th will be another monumental milestone to celebrate with our fans and we cannot wait to share this film with them.

Further details about the documentary, such as a potential release date, will be reported as they come.
