MTV To Air Documentary Honoring R.E.M.

R.E.M. accomplished many things over the course of their 30-year history, but one thing that doesn’t get talked about so much is the influence they had on MTV and music videos in general during the medium’s early days. The band were among the first underground rock bands to embrace the music video format, albeit in their own unique way (It took Michael Stipe ten years before he could be convinced to lip-sync on camera). Now, MTV is going to return the favor with a documentary chronicling R.E.M.’s rise on the network. Titled R.E.M. By MTV, the documentary will follow the band’s ascent from gangly college kids from Athens, Georgia to their later position as one of the most popular and respected bands in the world. From the looks of the things, the doc will include footage of Michael Stipe with hair, so brace yourself if you’ve never seen that before.

R.E.M. By MTV will air in November on MTV and VH1. The documentary will also be included in the REMTV box set, due out on November 24th. Watch the trailer for R.E.M. By MTV below:
