Furthur Break Up

Furthur, the Dead side project founded by Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, is no more. The jam band posted a note on their website confirming their split. The band went on an indefinite hiatus earlier this year.

Weir and Lesh formed Furthur with Jeff Chimenit and Jay Lane (both of RatDog) and Joh Kadlecik (The Dark Star Orchestra) in 2009. After reuniting The Dead in 2008 for a series of tours supporting the presidential campaign of Barack Obama, Weir and Lesh got the itch to perform again and started the new band to re-interpret the Grateful Dead songbook for a new audience. Lane left the band in 2010 to rejoin his old band Primus; crack drummer Joe Russo replaced him.

The note posted on the band’s website says that the former Furthur’s members will keep busy without the band. That’s certainly true for Lesh, who has been touring with his Phil Lesh & Friends show for the past year. Weir recently took time off the road after a health scare; he will hopefully be back on the road soon.
