With a much buzzed about round of CMJ gigging under their belts, the riotous Melbourne, Australia based psych-punks King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have wasted no time in following up their Oddments LP out earlier this year. I’m In Your Mind Fuzz strikes a chord and capitalizes on the en vogue freak-out rock sound evident in popular recent releases from the likes of Ty Segall and Ariel Pink.
The contradictory one-two opening punch of “I’m In Your Mind” and “I’m Not In Your Mind” immediately sets the tone with searing, fuzzed-out guitar work as the overarching focal point of the album’s direction with vocalist Stu Mackenzie’s snot-punk sneer washed out in otherworldly reverb. Transitioning from the high-octane opener to the instrumental follow-up, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard provide a perfect desert scene soundscape with snake charmer solos spliced intermittently.
The underlying, undulating consistency of the band’s rhythm section jump out ahead and underscore while also standing out on the mind-melting “Cellophane” and the acoustic intro’d “Am I In Heaven”. The quick tempos don’t stop until the mid-album dream-psych odysseys “Empty” and “Hot Water,” which mixes melodic, under-stated guitars with flowery flutes.
At the end of I’m In Your Mind Fuzz‘s forty some odd minutes, and after a cerebral re-adjustment, it becomes clear that King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are riding more than a wave of genre zeitgeist. With an expansive sound and voice, these Aussie rad rockers should be back headlining larger venues stateside soon enough.
