Exclusive: Watch This Rare Peek Inside William Elliott Whitmore’s Recording Studio

William Elliot Whitmore, Anti-, Animals in the Dark, Radium Death,

Sometimes we don’t want to see how the sausage is made. In this exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from the recording of young roots-folk star William Elliott Whitmore’s upcoming album, we get a rare chance to see the joy in the making. As Whitmore gears up for the March 31 release of Radium Death, he lets us into the studio where his cousin, Luke Tweedy, records his work.

In the video, Whitmore reflects on the close working relationship he’s lucky to have with Tweedy, as well as the way he’s changed and progressed as an artist. Known for his sparse, acoustic style, he hints of the upcoming album, “There’s gonna be banjo, there’s gonna be guitar, there’s gonna be a kick drum—’cause that’s what I like, and I’ll always like that. But within those parameters, there’s boundaries to be pushed. In those margins, I think that’s where some of the interesting stuff starts to happen.”

Whitmore promises a more electric, full-band sound on Radium Death, but fans needn’t worry about quality, because for these Iowan cousins, it’s still all about the process, which happens as it happens. In a sentiment that Whitmore echoes, Tweedy tells us, “I don’t care how long it takes, I want it to be right. In the end, that’s what’s most important.”

Look below for the full clip, and then keep an eye out for both Whitmore on tour and for Radium Death on March 31 from Anti- Records (pre-order here and here).

  1. Yes , different than anything he’s done, but by far my favorite record. Beautifully crafted, and what a talent here. Love the full band sound for William. And the last song, “Ain’t Gone Yet” , arguably the Best best William song ever.
    Amazing.

    Thanks William
