Amy Winehouse’s Family Decries Upcoming Documentary

Amy WinehouseThe family of the late Amy Winehouse released a statement distancing themselves from an upcoming documentary, titled Amy, about the troubled songstress. Calling the film “misleading” and accusing the filmmakers of including “basic untruths,” the family called the film a “missed opportunity to celebrate her life and talent.”

The family is upset at, among other things, the film’s depiction of her family and management’s role in the singer’s drug-fueled decline and premature death. In particular, they are upset at the characterization of her family and management as not doing everything possible to help her treat her addictions while pushing her to perform, ultimately hastening her demise. Also at issue is the filmmakers’ decision to include assertions from Winehouse’s ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, blaming her father for her addictions. The family contends, rather, that Fielder-Civil introduced her to hard drugs and enabled her self-destructive behavior.

Ultimately, the statement expresses the family’s belief “that the film does a disservice to individuals and families suffering from the complicated affliction of addiction.” Amy will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this May. Watch the trailer below:
