Grateful Dead May Tour With John Mayer This Autumn

Grateful Dead, Grateful Dead Farewell, Santa ClaraIt seems that the Grateful Dead are having a difficult time saying goodbye after all. In addition to their upcoming “Fare Thee Well” concerts in Chicago and Santa Clara, the band may be planning a tour with guitarist and singer/songwriter John Mayer joining the band.

First, the band announced three 50th anniversary shows at Chicago’s Soldier Field, site of their final concert with Jerry Garcia in 1995, to be played over July 4th weekend. The shows, were marketed as the final shows under the Grateful Dead moniker, with surviving original members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart being joined onstage by keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, pianist Bruce Hornsby and Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio. Next the band announced two final hometown shows in Santa Clara set for the preceding weekend featuring the same lineup.

Now comes word that the band may be planning a tour with Mayer, who recently performed a couple of Grateful Dead songs with Bob Weir on The Late Late Show. At this point, the tour is little more than a rumor and, according to promoter Peter Shapiro, as quoted by Billboard, the tour will not be under the Grateful Dead banner. That said, it does not seem that the four remaining members of the Dead are actually ready to bid their fans “farewell.”

  1. Even if this is somewhat true, it will not involve all four remaining members. At most it will be Bobby and Phil.
