Sonny Landreth Gets Back To Basics On New Album ‘Bound By The Blues’

Slide guitarist Sonny Landreth is set to release a new album, Bound By The Blues, that, as the title indicates, returns him to his blues roots. After 2012’s orchestral, instrumental, multi-genre fusion Elemental Journey, Landreth’s new album should see him playing and singing the type of music that has garnered him acclaim over his 35 years as a solo artist and sideman for such artists as John Hiatt, John Mayall and Jimmy Buffett.

This is not to say that Landreth has left behind the other genres that he has explored in recent years, but rather that he has incorporated them into a more direct, blues-based format. Regarding the new album, Landreth says, “I thought I’d get back to the simple but powerful blues form. I’d been playing a lot of these songs on the road with my band, and we’ve been taking them into some surprising places musically.” This is evident on the title track, which combines stomping, bluesy verses with more harmonically complex choruses, with Landreth’s earthy vocals and tasteful electric slide guitar featured throughout.
