Spooky folk chanteuse Sharon Van Etten is set to release an EP titled I Don’t Want To Let You Down as a follow up last year’s LP Are We There, on of 2014’s best albums. After debuting the EP’s title track on Ellen back in January, she has released another song from the EP, the lush, downbeat “Just Like Blood.”
Since her first album, 2009’s Because I Was In Love, each of the Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter’s releases has been greeted with increasing attention and acclaim, with Elmore‘s reviews editor Kevin Korber praising Are We There‘s “grandiose sweep” and “heartfelt, epic songs.” Judging by “Just Like Blood,” I Don’t Want To Let You Down should follow in that tradition. The song begins with a mournful organ set against a simple, minor key piano figure and builds toward a sweeping, heartbreaking conclusion, with seasick strings and Van Etten’s strangled vocal harmonies pairing perfectly with her lyrics about oceans, drowning and blood. It is a dark, affecting song.
I Don’t Want To Let You Down will be released by Jagjaguwar on June 9. Listen to “Just Like Blood” below:
