Listen To Leon Bridges’ Throwback Gospel On “River”

Leon Bridges, Coming HomeTexas-bred, throwback soul singer/songwriter Leon Bridges will be releasing Coming Home, his highly anticipated debut album, on Columbia Records on June 23rd. To further feed into that anticipation, he has released the final track on the album, “River,” as a single.

Like the other singles that Bridges has released, “River” is highly reminiscent of 1960s style gospel and R&B, evoking Soul Stirrers-era Sam Cooke in particular. “River” is a relatively spare track, with Bridges’s soulful vocals accompanied solely by a lightly strummed acoustic guitar, some tambourine patter and occasional harmony vocals. And while the religious content of the lyrics is not as explicit as more traditional gospel, the “oceanic feeling” of religious faith that Freud described is palpable throughout the song.

Bridges has graduated from the Fort Worth open mic scene to the big time, and fans of classic soul and gospel should take heed. Listen to “River” below:
