Exclusive: Check Out Perhaps The Definitive Version Of Janis Ian’s “Society’s Child”

Legendary singer/songwriter Janis Ian has a long history with the equally legendary Greenwich Village venue, The Bottom Line. From attending the club’s opening night to drinking champagne backstage with Joan Baez to having her mother (confined to a wheelchair due to MS, yet always given a special spot up front by the club’s generous owner, Allan Pepper) attend all her shows there, Ian always felt right at home at The Bottom Line.

So it’s not at all surprising that when Ian performed at The Bottom Line, magic was in the air. On June 29, fans will get a chance to taste that magic with the 35th anniversary edition of Janis Ian: Live at the Bottom Line (to be released simultaneously with a similar Bottom Line reissue from Harry Chapin), recorded over two nights in August of 1980. Among the night’s highlights is Ian’s performance of her classic first single, “Society’s Child.” Ian owns the room with just her voice and a few, simple flourishes from her acoustic, the audience rapt at the delicate lilt and powerful soar of her voice.

Check out “Society’s Child” below and look for Live at the Bottom Line on June 29. Then, on July 18, find Ian at the RiverSong Music Festival in Hutchinson, MN.
