When you’ve been in the industry for five decades, you learn a thing or two, and unfortunately for young Bettye LaVette, who was discovered at age 16, the lesson was that the industry doesn’t always play fair. Child of the Seventies was recorded in Muscle Shoals in 1972, and was set to be a breakout album that would make LaVette a star… until it was shelved indefinitely. But with an enormous talent and call to the performing life that couldn’t be ignored, LaVette preserved and continued to make music, and just this year, 30+ years later, Child of the Seventies was finally released.

Now LaVette is making up for lost time in her deserved spotlight, with an album of new material, Worthy, out this year as well, thanks to some help from producer Joe Henry.

On 10/16 LaVette will grace the stage at New York’s City Winery for a late show that will get you grooving late into the evening. While you’re at it, you might as well shell out for that Meet and Greet ticket. More info here.
