Known for strapping his keyboard to an ironing board while he performs on stage, blues dynamo Ironing Board Sam, at the age of 75, is continuing his roaring comeback with his latest track, “I’m Gone” from his upcoming album, Super Spirit.

Sam’s storied past is the stuff of legend. Back in 1962, Sam was fronted a band that included the young Jimi Hendrix, and issued a few singles through Atlantic Records and other soul labels. In the early 1970s, Sam recorded “Ninth Wonder of the World of Music” in Indiana, where he had a residency with the Jackson 5. Over the decades, his unforgettable live shows (including one inside a 1,500 gallon tank, and some with a toy monkey on percussion) made him a one-of-a-kind performer.

In recent years, Sam has made a kind of comeback, captivating new audiences with performances at events like the Newport Folk Festival and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and was even named Living Blues Comeback Artist of the Year in 2012 by Billboard.

“I’m Gone” features funky saxophone and piano rhythms underneath Sam’s bluesy declaration that “the trick is turned on you, I’m gone,” leaving his lover behind. His gritty vocals are accompanied by a soulful female chorus, making for some truly catchy modern blues.
