Who knew growing up could be so tough? David Ryan Harris beautifully mines the complications of love in particular, singing of the confusion and desperate desire that comes from trying to answer the question, “where is this relationship going?” In his new song “So Is Mine,” Harris explores the feelings of two people who are in a relationship that neither wants to admit is over. The couple lies awake, going through the motions, when they’re just not sure they want to anymore.

Harris was born in Chicago, but raised in Atlanta. He grew up when Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Robert Johnson lead the popular music scene, yet still tested its limits. From these pioneers, Harris learned that music shouldn’t be seen in a singular way. In 1997, he signed with Columbia Records and released a self-titled album. Later, in 2000, he signed to Elektra with his band Brand New Immortals, but found himself in flux again when the label went under. From 2004 until 2012, he performed with John Mayer’s band as a guitarist and singer, while also playing with and producing artists such as Dave Matthews, Santana and Guy Sebastian. All the while, Harris has been independently releasing singles and solo albums, and on October 23, he released his fourth full length album, Lightyears, for which he’s currently on tour.

In the “So Is Mine” video, you get to see Harris doing what he does best. He performs alone with his guitar, singing beautiful and all-too-real lyrics about a relationship coming to an end. Harris achingly depicts the confusion that comes with this stage in life, singing, “you have all the answers, I have all the answers, and we’re both wrong.” The couple chooses to stay in a relationship that is slowly dying, “but we both know it’s barely beating, can’t break through, I’m afraid of letting go and so are you.” Ultimately, Harris chooses to end the song without a real conclusion, the relationship hanging by a thread, a bold way to mirror the messiness of life: “your heart’s in trouble and so is mine.”
