Blues and southern rock with sweet country soul gets wrapped up in the Charlotte, North Carolina duo of Robert Johnson and Pam Taylor. The real life couple’s songs are filled with big hearts and big talents.

While Dirty Southern Soul definitely shows off their musical abilities, the album as a whole doesn’t really stand-out among others in the genre. Luckily, down-South musicians aren’t worried about competing with one another, and fans of the music just want more to listen to. “My Johnny”, for example, isn’t a stand-out track, but it’s very loving. With a gentle guitar intro and lyrics, it’s the type of song Stolen Hearts was meant to sing (cue the first dance at a wedding). While they are currently doing dates around their home, it shouldn’t be long before a big-name country musician picks them up and makes Johnson and Taylor the perfect musical companion for a summer tour.

The final two tracks on Dirty Southern Soul are live ones, so the listeners get a chance to hear Stolen Hearts in raw form. Vocals and instruments are just as strong as they are pre-recorded, but much more natural. Don’t skip around this album. Listen in order, because the duo’s cover of Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind” is definitely a “save the best for last” scenario.
