As much as any one man or any one band could claim to have invented Americana music, it could very well be John McEuen and his Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Starting in the early ’70s, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band mixed folk, rock, country, bluegrass and more into a wholly traditional yet wholly new musical brew.

These days, with Mumford & Sons and the like topping the charts, and Americana thriving as a cultural force, we must remember, now more than, ever the genre’s roots. It’s not at all surprising, then, that upon John McEuen’s 70th birthday, such a plethora of the many musicians he’s worked with and influenced over the years would come out to pay tribute–and rock out.

On December 16, at Music City Roots in Franklin, TN, McEuen will be joined by John Carter Cash, the Roland White Band, Rhonda Vincent, Bernie Leadon, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, David Amram, Jeff Hanna, Jesse McReynolds, John Cable, and others. McEuen was clearly right on the money when he called the show a “musical family reunion.” What’s more, you can see all these artists together for as little as $10.
